British Women's Race Team, based in the North West - UK National Road & Track plus some racing in Europe and anything a little bit different. Ride like champions and look like rock stars!

History

The Maxgear women’s cycling team was born in 2009. Riders were selected from a number of backgrounds including road racing (Team Luciano), triathlon and running. Their first race was the Tour of Chongming Island in Shanghai, China. A new kit was created by Maxgear and Champion Systems and the tour was a fantastic experience for all! Team Cyclosport have a blog on the tour see http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=119181497575
Maxgear also supported the Vision 1 team in 2009 headed up by World Champion Nicole Cooke.
After an exciting start, the 2009 season saw the Womens team racing brought to a more local level, with Maxgear being based in Cheshire, domestic riders were supported including Anna Fischer who became National Hill Climb Champion in the year and elite rider Marianne Britten and they competed in the British National Women’s Team Series around the UK. During 2009 the Maxgear ladies were narrowly pipped into 2nd place overall by Mischief.com.

2010 was another strong year for Maxgear including a win at Darley Moor for Marianne, but once again they were pushed into 2nd place this time by Motorpoint. It was also a year of change for Maxgear, a number of riders retired and others moved onto other teams including one on the continent. Our youngest rider Olivia Greenhalgh (under 8’s) joined the team winning two races at Salt Eyre. At the end of 2010 an eye-catching new kit was designed by Maxgear and supplied by Champion Systems and an entirely new team was formed with triathletes and road racers all based in the North West for the 2011 season, with the view to retaining and developing young talent.
2011 was a year for the juniors with wins in the national Junior Women’s Hill Climb Championships and National Rollapoluza Championships, 2nd in the National Junior Women’s TT champs, 3rd in the Regional Road Race Championships and top ten’s in the junior and senior National Track Championships.
In 2012, the team was expanded to 6 riders solely focusing on road and track racing. Eve and Mel defended their titles in the Hill Climb and Rollapoluza Championships. Hayley Edwards produced a stunning ride for the team, with a podium at her local race the Newport Nocturne. The team also achieved top tens in the National Hill Climb and Track Championships, as well as top tens (including a 2nd place) in road races.

For the 2013 season two even more local riders have been added (meaning most of our riders now live within 5 miles of each other) with the aim building a strong team working ethos. The well known luminous yellow kit has also been further will be even more visible than in previous years.
Track rider (and multi world champion) Janet Birkmyre will also be supported by Maxgear for 2013.
